Whether you are a new or returning student, you must be classified as degree-seeking to receive financial aid.



Processing Year 2007-2008


Processing Year 2008-2009

  1. Apply for admission to The University of Memphis (new students)
  2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  3. Be prepared to submit additional information if requested.

    You will receive a 2007-2008 Student Aid Report (SAR) in response to your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Review the data for accuracy and make changes, as necessary, according to the directions. If selected for verification, as indicated on the SAR, submit the verification worksheet and a signed copy of your and/or your spouse's or parents' 2006 tax return.

    Return any other missing documents to the Financial Aid Office. Notify our office if your attendance site is other than the Memphis campus.

  4. Wait for award notification.

    Your file will be reviewed for a financial aid award or non-award decision uponreceipt of all required documents.

    If awarded, the aid information will be posted on SPECTRUM portal]. Log in and review the Award Summary in the Financial Aid section. You are given the option to decline your aid on-line. NOTE: If you want to decline only a partial amount of any type of aid, you must sumbit a written request to the Financial Aid Office.

    NOTE: All correspondence regarding the status of your financial aid is e-mailed to your University of Memphis e-mail address (or, if not yet admitted, the address you provided on your FAFSA). The Financial Aid Office no longer mails out award notifications. If you have any questions regarding the status of your aid application, check SPECTRUM.

    If awarded prior to the beginning of the fee payment period for the semester, you may receive your aid award at the time designated by the Bursar's Office on their web site. After classes begin, contact the Bursar's Office regarding availability of awards.

    Award notifications are normally processed for the Fall/Spring academic year. Separate award notifications are processed for the summer semester. If you will require aid for the Summer semester, complete a Summer Update Form located on the Financial Aid Forms page (available in early April each year).

    Note: Summer 2008 is actually part of the 2007-2008 year so you must have the results of the 2007-2008 FAFSA on file for aid consideration.
