Student employees are assigned to group positions, i.e. individual position numbers are not designated for student employees.
The University of Memphis Student employee's (Regular and Federal Work-Study) hourly wage is determined by their experience and knowledge. The following pay range guidelines should be utilized by the departments' supervisors when determining fair and equitable hourly wages and subsequent yearly pay raises. There is a mandated minimum wage of $5.85 an hour. Under Regular Student Employment, the department is responsible for 100% of the student's earnings. Under Federal Work-Study, the department is responsible for 25% of the student's earnings. NOTE: If the department feels a higher rate of pay is justified (i.e. does not meet the following pay range guidelines) then a memorandum with job description and justification must be submitted to the Student Employment Office with the employment paperwork to obtain approval. Student employees may be hired at any pay level within a specific category depending on their knowledge and experience. |

| Category I - Labor and Attendant Positions | ||||||||||||||
Includes:
Level I -- Simple attendant duties. Little responsibility. Minimum work involvement.
Level II -- Simple attendant duties. Added responsibility and work involvement.
Level III -- Unskilled labor. Some exertion required, but no strenuous activity. More responsibility in assigned areas.
Level IV -- Skilled labor. More exertion then Level III. Strenuous activity, more responsibility.

Includes:
Level I -- Simple clerical tasks. Requires supervision.
Level II -- Clerical assistant. Added responsibility, less supervision.
Level III -- Skilled clerical assistant. With experience, little supervision needed.
Level IV -- Highly skilled clerical assistant. With experience, little or no supervision needed.

Level II -- More technical knowledge required. Added responsibility, less supervision.
Level III -- Highly skilled technical abilities. Makes decisions, little or no supervision required.
Level IV -- Advanced technical knowledge required. Works independently. May supervise other students.

Level II -- Assists instructors and performs classroom duties. May work independently.
Level III -- Highly skilled assistant with experience. Makes decisions, little or no supervision required.
Level IV -- Advanced knowledge in discipline required. Works independently, may supervise other students.
